Mental illness is something that can take a dramatic toll on a person and all those around him. Impacts from mental illness are seen in one's home, work and personal life. Serious mental illnesses like major depressive disorder can even lead to the death of those suffering from them. Mental illness is not something to be taken lightly.

Major depression is a huge challenge in today's society with approximately more than one in 15 people having suffered from a major depressive episode in the last year. Depression is seen in both sexes and in all ages, including children, although it's more common among females and those age 40-59. But many people suffer with depression needlessly because they don't know what depression really is and don't get appropriate treatment. While anyone can write a list of clinical symptoms, it's how depression manifests in real people that really makes a mark.

That's where this seminar comes in. This seminar focuses not only on the clinical facts surrounding major depression such as the recognized risk factors, symptoms and treatments, but also on how depression really impacts a person. Firsthand accounts of how depression feels and how depression treatment feels are included to ensure that this seminar is fact-based and person-centered. Attendees will learn about the basics of mental illness, all about depression and how it manifests in real people, what it's like to live with depression, the stigma around depression, depression treatments and what it's like to be treated for depression. Day one will focus on living with depression while day two will focus on living through depression treatment. The seminar will end with ways of supporting a person with major depression.

Why you should attend:

In 2015, approximately 16.1 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States had at least one major depressive episode in the past year. This number represented 6.7% of all adults in the United States. International numbers mirror these. This is a worldwide health concern that cannot be ignored.

And while there are many resources that can tell a person about the clinical implications depression, what often gets lost is the human element. What few resources focus on is what it really feels like to have to live with depression and depression treatments.

This seminar focuses on depression both in a clinical and in a personal sense. Attendees will learn what depression is medically and they will also hear firsthand accounts of what depression and depression treatment feels like. This is an opportunity not only to get the real facts about depression but also to understand the impact depression truly has on a person's life.

This seminar is being led by Natasha Tracy, a noted mental health advocate and author, who has been living with the realities of depression for decades. It is her perspective on depression that makes this seminar unique. It is truly a person-centered approach to learning about this serious illness and will benefit all those dealing with depression or depression treatment in themselves or others.
